Marinara (Mariner's) is a southern Italian sauce tomato sauceusually made with Tomatoes, garlic, herbs (Such as basil), andonion. However, there are many variations. Some of theseinclude the Addition of Capers, olives, anchovies, and / or spices.
Traditional southern Italian cuisine utilizes this sauce to add flavorto pasta, rice, seafood and pizza. This sauce is also widely usedin Italian-American cuisine-the which has diverged significantlyfrom its Old World origins.
Italians refer to marinara only in association with other recipes.For instance, spaghetti alla marinara literally translates toMariner's spaghetti. However, tomato sauce alone in Italy isCalled salsa al Pomodoro or pummarola.
